The True Story of Jesus: Biblical, Historical, and Eyewitness Evidence

If you’re following along with us, we’re so excited to dive deeper into the story of Jesus’ arrival. If you haven’t yet, be sure to check out our first Advent post, “Do Not Be Afraid”, where we discussed the angel’s comforting message to Mary and Joseph. Today, we’ll explore why it’s so important for believers to know with certainty that Jesus truly came to earth. Luke’s narrative gives us powerful insight into the truth of Christ’s life, and we’ll explore three key ways his account affirms that Jesus’ coming is not only real, but also essential to our faith.

1. Biblical Prophecy Fulfilled

Luke’s Gospel is full of references to Old Testament prophecies that are fulfilled in the life of Jesus. From the angel’s announcement to Mary (Luke 1:26-38) to Simeon’s recognition of the baby Jesus as the promised Messiah (Luke 2:25-32), Luke reminds us that Jesus’ birth was no accident. It was foretold long before His arrival. The virgin birth, for example, aligns with Isaiah 7:14, confirming that Jesus was God’s promised Savior.

Why is this significant?
When we see Jesus fulfilling these ancient prophecies, it strengthens our belief that God’s plan is faithful and unchanging. Every detail of Jesus’ life was part of God’s perfect timing, reassuring us that God’s Word is true and trustworthy.

2. Historical Context

Luke carefully places Jesus’ life within a detailed historical context. By mentioning historical figures like Caesar Augustus, Herod, and Pilate (Luke 2:1-3, 3:1, 23:1), Luke affirms that the events surrounding Jesus’ birth and ministry were part of real history, not myths or legends. For example, the census during Caesar Augustus’ reign that brought Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem (Luke 2:1-3) is a historical event documented outside the Bible as well.

Why is this significant?
The inclusion of these historical details solidifies the truth of Jesus’ life. It shows that the Gospel is rooted in real, verifiable events, making the story of Jesus more than just a spiritual tale—it’s an actual moment in history that we can trust.

3. Eyewitness Testimony

One of the most powerful aspects of Luke’s Gospel is his reliance on eyewitness accounts. He opens his narrative by stating that he “carefully investigated everything” and “decided to write an orderly account” (Luke 1:3). Throughout the Gospel, Luke includes vivid details from those who were there, such as the shepherds’ visit to see the newborn Jesus (Luke 2:8-20) and the women who discovered Jesus’ resurrection at the tomb (Luke 24:1-12). These are personal, eyewitness testimonies that ground Luke’s account in reality.

Why is this significant?
Eyewitness testimony adds depth and credibility to Luke’s narrative. When we read these first-hand accounts, we can trust that Jesus’ life and miracles were observed by real people. This makes the story of Jesus not only believable but also powerful.
