Post#8 The Light of the World

Christ, Our Light and Peace

My first camping and hiking trip was supposed to be an adventure—a fun getaway with a group of girlfriends. During the day, everything felt fresh and exciting. We hiked to the lodge for dinner, laughing and enjoying the crisp outdoor air. But when it came time to walk back to camp, things took a turn.

It was so dark. The kind of darkness where you can’t see two feet in front of you. And then it started to pour—not the gentle rain you can shrug off, but sheets of water, soaking everything. To make things worse, thunder rolled, and flashes of lightning lit up the night sky. It wasn’t exactly the peaceful first night in a tent I had envisioned.

I remember lying awake in the tent, cold and anxious, unable to sleep. I kept praying for the light of dawn to come. It’s funny how comforting light is in the middle of darkness. If only I could just see, I thought, I wouldn’t feel so scared.

Eventually, morning came. The storm had passed, and the dark sky gave way to a soft gray mist. As we set out on our hike, the rain we had endured the night before transformed the trails into something spectacular. The waterfalls, fed by the downpour, were now roaring and full of life. The hardship of the night made the beauty of the morning even more striking.

This experience reminds me of the spiritual truth that Jesus is the Light of the World.

The Light That Shines in Darkness

Isaiah 9:2 captures this beautifully: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”

Just as the light of dawn brought relief and hope after that stormy night, the coming of Jesus pierces through the darkness of sin and despair, offering hope and peace to all who trust in Him.

We all experience seasons of life that feel dark—times when the path forward feels uncertain, and fear threatens to overwhelm us. In those moments, we can cling to the promise that Jesus is our light.

“I Am the Light of the World”

In John 8:12, Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Without Jesus, life feels a lot like that stormy night—unpredictable, overwhelming, and often terrifying. But when we follow Him, His light gives us direction and peace, even when the path is uncertain or difficult.

His light doesn’t necessarily remove the storms of life, but it transforms how we walk through them. Just as the waterfalls on my hike were transformed by the rain, Jesus uses our trials to create something beautiful.

Living as Children of Light

Ephesians 5:8-9 reminds us that not only does Jesus guide us, but He transforms us: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”

Through His grace, we’re called to reflect His light to the world around us. This isn’t always easy, especially when we’re still navigating our own struggles, but it’s a powerful testimony to His work in our lives.

A Light That Cannot Be Overcome

John 1:5 proclaims, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

No matter how dark or stormy life gets, Jesus’ light is never extinguished. He is our constant source of hope and peace.

As I think back on that camping trip, I see God’s hand even in the little moments. He used the storm to create beauty, just as He often uses the struggles in our lives to reveal His glory and strengthen our faith.

Reflecting on Christ, Our Light

This Advent season, let’s take time to reflect on how Christ has been our light:

  • When have you experienced His guidance in the middle of a storm?
  • How has His light brought you peace?
  • In what ways can you reflect His light to others who may be walking in darkness today?

Just as I prayed for the dawn that night in the tent, we can cry out to Jesus to guide us through our darkest moments. And when His light breaks through, it transforms everything.

Finding Comfort in His Light

As we celebrate Advent and reflect on the coming of Christ, the Light of the World, let’s remember that His light not only saves us but sustains us. His presence gives us hope in the darkest nights and peace that surpasses understanding. May we walk confidently in His light, allowing it to guide our steps and illuminate our purpose. And as we experience His goodness, let’s share that light with others, pointing them to the One who brings life and peace.

Stay wildly faithful. xoxox, Erin
