Post #11 Embracing Truth Over Legend, Fame, and Notoriety
Reminder: This Advent season, I am walking through the Just as He Promised study, reflecting on God’s faithfulness and His fulfilled promises. Throughout December, I’ll share my reflections as we journey through the heart of Christmas with hope and anticipation. Today we are talking about embracing truth over lengend, fame and notoriety.
As we reflect on Luke 2:1-20 during the Advent season, it’s natural to compare the eternal truth of Christ’s birth to the fleeting power and influence of worldly figures, such as Caesar Augustus. This comparison helps us refocus on what truly matters—Jesus, the Savior, who reigns far above all earthly rulers, traditions, and cultural icons.
In a world where legends, fame, and traditions often take center stage, how do our lives demonstrate an embracing of truth over these temporary things? And how can we combat the temptation to overstate them in our hearts?
Jesus vs. Caesar Augustus: A Contrast Worth Reflecting On
Similarities:
- Both are associated with peace:
- Caesar Augustus brought the Pax Romana, a time of earthly peace.
- Jesus is the Prince of Peace, offering peace with God and eternal reconciliation.
- Both have kingdoms:
- Caesar ruled the vast Roman Empire through power.
- Jesus reigns over an eternal, unshakable kingdom with divine authority.
- Both were announced to the world:
- Caesar’s decrees were proclaimed to his subjects.
- Jesus’ birth was announced by angels, bringing good news for all people.
Superiority of Jesus:
- Eternal vs. Temporary: Caesar’s reign ended, but Jesus reigns forever.
- True Peace vs. Superficial Peace: Augustus’ peace relied on control; Jesus offers a peace that transforms hearts.
- Humility vs. Power: Caesar ruled from a throne, while Jesus, the King of Kings, was born in a manger.
- Divine Nature: Caesar was deified by man, but Jesus is the true Son of God.
- Salvation for All: Caesar’s benefits were limited to elites; Jesus’ salvation is for everyone who believes.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gained a newfound appreciation for history. I find it absolutely fascinating to learn about biblical history alongside world history—seeing how God’s plans unfolded during pivotal moments in human history reminds me that He is always sovereign. When I study figures like Caesar Augustus in the context of Jesus’ birth, it deepens my awe for how God orchestrates His story amidst world events.
Beware the “Magic” of the Season
At Christmas, it’s easy to get caught up in the “magic” of the holiday—our traditions, plans, and even the cultural obsession with perfection. When one thing goes wrong or doesn’t feel as magical as expected, it can feel like “Christmas is ruined.”
The same can happen with the way we view earthly leaders or cultural icons. We may look to them for hope, validation, or solutions, but the truth is they can never know us or satisfy us like Jesus can.
How to Combat This Temptation
- Recenter on the Gospel Daily
Reflect on the true story of Christmas: God came to dwell among us to bring salvation. Let this eternal truth ground you and shift your focus from the temporary to the eternal. - Hold Traditions Loosely
Traditions are meaningful, but they shouldn’t overshadow Christ. Ask yourself, How does this tradition point me back to Jesus? - Deepen Your Relationship with the Lord
As you mentioned, deepening your walk with Jesus is the key to resisting the pull of the world. Spend time in His Word, in prayer, and worship to grow closer to Him. - Practice Gratitude
When things don’t go as planned, gratitude helps redirect our hearts to the joy we have in Christ. He is the unchanging gift, no matter the circumstances.
How Does My Life Demonstrate Truth Over Legend, Fame, and Notoriety?
Living a life that embraces truth means prioritizing Jesus over worldly recognition and seeking to glorify Him in all we do. Here are ways to evaluate and align your life with this goal:
- Living for God’s Glory, Not Your Own
Your life reflects truth when your actions, decisions, and words point others to Jesus rather than seeking personal fame or approval. - Grounding Your Identity in Christ
Instead of chasing the fleeting validation of the world, root your identity in who you are in Christ. This frees you from striving for human recognition. - Choosing Truth Over Comfort
Standing firm on biblical values, even when it’s countercultural, demonstrates a commitment to truth over worldly compromise. - Pointing Others to Christ
Use your influence to reflect Christ’s love and grace. Let your life be a beacon that directs others to Him. - Practicing Humility
Legends and fame thrive on pride, but a life grounded in truth is marked by humility and dependence on God.
Practical Ways to Live Out Truth
- Daily Surrender: Begin each day asking God to align your heart with His truth.
- Invest in Eternal Impact: Focus on what matters for eternity—discipleship, relationships, and sharing the gospel.
- Stay in the Word: Regular time in Scripture strengthens your ability to discern truth from lies (Romans 12:2).
Embracing truth over legend, fame, and notoriety is a daily journey of choosing Christ. It means holding traditions loosely, valuing humility over recognition, and prioritizing the eternal over the temporary. May we all live lives that reflect the beauty of the gospel and the power of the Savior who knows us personally and loves us unconditionally.
How does your life reflect truth over the fleeting promises of this world? Let’s strive together to stay grounded in the eternal hope of Christ this season and beyond.
Stay wildly faithful. xoxox, Erin
