As the days get shorter and the air cooler, I’ve started feeling it again—those heavy, hard-to-shake feelings of sadness that come with seasonal depression. Typically, I don’t experience it until after the holidays, usually around January, but this year, it’s crept in a little earlier—this time in November. I’ve learned over the years that it’s important to recognize these feelings and take steps to care for myself, both spiritually and physically. And while it’s tough, I know that I’m not without hope. Jesus is right there with me in these dark moments, offering His comfort and peace.
I want to share a bit of my journey with you, talk about the struggles that so many of us face, and remind you that, as believers, our hope is always in Christ. Plus, I’ve put together a seasonal wellness list with some of my favorite products from Walmart that help me navigate these tougher months.
Feeling the Weight of Seasonal Depression Early This Year
In the past, I’ve learned to recognize when seasonal depression starts to affect me—usually right after the holidays. The rush of Christmas, the excitement, and the sense of purpose that fills the holiday season tend to fade quickly when January hits. But this year? The cloud seems to have settled in early, in November, before the Christmas season even begins.
I know this might sound familiar to some of you. The days feel darker, energy is lower, and the to-do list seems endless. Add to that the holiday stress, and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. But I’ve learned that just because I feel this way doesn’t mean I have to stay in this place. I’m learning to lean into God’s promises and remind myself that my feelings, though real, do not define me.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
This verse brings me such comfort, especially when it feels like my spirit is heavy and weary. Jesus understands. He’s with me, and He’s with you, too.
The Struggle is Real, but Jesus is Our Hope
Seasonal depression can feel isolating, and it’s easy to wonder, “Why am I feeling this way? Why can’t I just shake it off?” But I’ve learned that just because I’m struggling doesn’t mean I’m failing or that I’m less of a Christian. We all face seasons of difficulty. Even Jesus experienced moments of sorrow and hardship, and He promises that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
During times like this, I find that I need to cling to His Word more than ever. I often find myself praying, “Lord, help me see Your light in this darkness. Remind me of Your promises.” It’s not always an immediate fix, but in those moments, I know I’m drawing closer to Him.
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
This verse is a reminder that I don’t have to carry the weight of my emotions alone. I can cast them on Jesus, knowing He cares deeply for me.
How to navigate Seasonal depression: Wellness Tips to Help You Through the Tougher Months
While I know Jesus is my ultimate source of peace and strength, I also believe in taking practical steps to care for my body and mind during these months. Over the years, I’ve learned that a few key habits and products really help me stay grounded and feel more energized. Here’s my seasonal wellness list, with some favorites I’ve found at Walmart. You can check out my Walmart storefront here.
- Mood-Boosting Supplements: I’ve started taking Vitamin D in the fall and winter months, as the lack of sunlight can really affect my mood. This simple addition has made a difference in how I feel throughout the day.
- Essential Oils for Relaxation & Mood Boosting: When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I rely love to use calming oils like lavender and eucalyptus. Citrus oils like orange and lemon help lift my mood, while peppermint is perfect for a refreshing mental boost. I diffuse these in the evenings for relaxation and use citrus or peppermint in the mornings for an energizing start.
- Cozy Comforts: Having a cozy blanket and a warm cup of tea is one of life’s little joys. I like to keep a blanket in my living room to wrap up in when I’m feeling down or exhausted.
- Light Therapy Lamps: I’ve recently started using a light therapy lamp, which helps mimic the natural sunlight I’m missing. It’s been especially helpful in the morning to kickstart my day.
- Journaling and Prayer: Writing down my thoughts and prayers has been therapeutic. I often write out my fears, my gratitude, and my prayers for strength. It helps me process my emotions and feel more centered.
- Mindfulness and Movement: Though it’s hard to get moving some days, I’ve found that light stretching or going for a walk, even in the colder months, helps my mood. Movement helps release tension and boosts my endorphins.
- Consistent Exercise: I’ve learned that staying consistent with my workouts, even when I don’t feel like it, helps me break through the fog of seasonal depression. Whether it’s a quick workout in the morning or a longer hike, it’s so worth it for my mood.
- Nutritious Foods: I’ve noticed that fueling my body with nutrient-dense foods really helps my overall well-being during the darker months. When I eat foods that nourish my body, I feel more energy and mental clarity.
- Outdoor Adventures: Despite the cooler weather, I’ve made it a priority to get outside and go hiking whenever possible. The fresh air, the beautiful surroundings, and the physical activity all help clear my mind and lift my spirits.
- Community Support: I’ve found that staying connected with others is essential. Being involved in my church, attending small group, and serving have all been huge supports for me. Plus, making plans for date nights with my husband and hanging out with friends has been incredibly refreshing.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
One thing I’ve learned is that it’s okay to ask for help. Whether it’s reaching out to a close friend or seeking professional support, there’s no shame in admitting that you need assistance. In fact, it can be one of the most courageous steps to take. And remember, you are not alone. We’re in this together, supporting one another as the body of Christ.
Seasonal depression is a real challenge, and this year, I’m feeling the weight of it a little earlier than usual. But in the midst of these tough moments, I remember that I am not without hope. Jesus is my comfort, my strength, and my peace, and through Him, I can face each day with courage.
If you’re navigating this season too, I want you to know you’re not alone. There is hope, there is healing, and there is support—both spiritually and practically. I pray that you find rest in His promises and that these wellness tips can help make the season a little easier to navigate.
