As Christian moms, we understand the significance of learning how to start your day with Jesus, centered on God’s Word and prayer. However, finding time for morning devotions amid the hustle and bustle of motherhood can be a daunting task. After having my youngest son, who is now 2.5 years old, I found it incredibly challenging to establish a rhythm for morning quiet time. Balancing life with a toddler and a 13-year-old is no small feat, and even now, I still find it difficult to create this sacred space. Despite these challenges, I’ve learned that prioritizing this time with Jesus is worth every bit of effort.

Psalm 143:8

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.

Psalm 143:8

The Power of Starting Your Day with Jesus

Why Mornings Matter

Starting your day with Jesus sets a peaceful and positive tone for the rest of the day. Psalm 5:3 (NIV) says, “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” By dedicating the first moments of your day to God, you invite His presence into every aspect of your daily life.

Personal Experience

After having my youngest son, the demands of motherhood made it nearly impossible to establish a consistent morning routine. There were sleepless nights, early wake-ups, and the constant needs of my children that seemed to consume every waking moment. However, I recently read a book titled Beholding by Strahan Coleman, and it profoundly changed my outlook on quiet time.

The Transformative Impact of Beholding

Embracing the Concept of “Beholding”

Beholding emphasizes the importance of simply being in God’s presence and gazing upon His beauty. It shifted my perspective from seeing quiet time as a task to be completed to a precious opportunity to connect with my Creator. The book encourages readers to slow down, breathe, and truly behold God in all His glory.

Practical Takeaways from Beholding

  1. Start Small: The book suggests starting with just a few minutes of quiet time. Even five minutes of focused prayer and scripture reading can make a significant difference.
  2. Be Present: Rather than rushing through a checklist of prayer requests, take time to sit quietly and listen for God’s voice. Allow His peace to wash over you.
  3. Use Scripture as a Guide: Reflect on passages that speak to you. Let the Word of God guide your thoughts and prayers.

Tips on How to Start Your Day with Jesus

1. Prepare the Night Before

Lay out your Bible, journal, and any other materials you need the night before. Set your alarm a bit earlier to give yourself enough time for this sacred practice.

2. Create a Peaceful Space

Designate a quiet, comfortable spot in your home for your morning devotions. It could be a cozy chair in your living room or a corner of your bedroom.

3. Start with Prayer

Begin your quiet time with a simple prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and open your heart to God’s Word.

4. Read Scripture

Choose a passage of scripture to read and meditate on. You can follow a reading plan or select verses that resonate with your current season of life.

5. Reflect and Journal

Take a few moments to reflect on what you’ve read and how it applies to your life. Journaling your thoughts and prayers can help deepen your connection with God.

6. Be Consistent

Consistency is key to establishing any new habit. Aim to spend time with God every morning, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Over time, this practice will become a natural and cherished part of your daily routine.

Encouragement for the Journey

Moms, I understand how challenging it can be to find time for morning devotions, especially with young children. But remember, God sees your heart and your desire to draw near to Him. He will honor your efforts, no matter how small they may seem.

Psalm 143:8 (NIV) says, “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” As you make the commitment to start your day with Jesus, trust that He will provide the strength and grace you need to navigate each day.

Final Thoughts

Starting your day with Jesus through early morning devotions is a powerful way to ground yourself in His love and truth. It may be challenging to establish this routine, but the rewards are immeasurable. Remember, it’s not about perfection but about the intention and effort to draw closer to God.

Thank you for joining me on this journey of faith. Let’s continue to support and encourage one another as we strive to live boldly for Christ.

xoxo, Erin
