Post #13 Worship Jesus during Advent
Worship Like the Wise Men: Surrendering to Jesus This Advent Season
Advent is a season of preparation, reflection, and celebration as we look forward to the coming of Christ. In Matthew 2, we read about the wise men who traveled a great distance to worship Jesus, offering Him treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Their gifts were not just valuable but deeply symbolic, representing Jesus as King, Priest, and Savior.
Their actions prompt us to ask ourselves: How can we worship Jesus this Advent season? What aspects of our lives do we need to lay before Him in surrender and worship? Let’s explore these questions together.
Worshiping Jesus This Advent
The wise men didn’t just bring their gifts—they brought their hearts in worship. As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, here are meaningful ways we can follow their example:
- Give Him Your Time:
Advent can be busy, but intentionally carving out time to focus on Jesus is an act of worship. Spend time in prayer, dive into scripture, and reflect on His character. Just as the wise men journeyed to find Jesus, we can seek Him daily in the quiet moments of our lives. - Practice Generosity:
The wise men brought treasures to honor Jesus. During this season, we can honor Him by being generous—whether it’s giving to someone in need, serving others, or blessing someone with an unexpected act of kindness. Generosity reflects the heart of God and points others to Him. - Offer Praise and Gratitude:
Worship is not just about giving tangible things; it’s about lifting up our hearts in praise. Sing songs of worship, journal prayers of thanksgiving, or share the good news of Jesus with others. Praise shifts our focus from ourselves to the greatness of God. - Walk in Obedience:
The wise men followed the star, trusting God’s guidance even when they didn’t know where it would lead. This Advent, worship Jesus through obedience—following His Word, living out His commands, and trusting Him with your decisions.
Surrendering to Jesus
Worship doesn’t stop at offering gifts or singing songs—it involves surrendering our hearts fully to Him. Just as the wise men knelt before the Christ child, we, too, can lay our lives at His feet.
Here are a few areas to consider surrendering this Advent season:
- Control and Worry:
It’s easy to cling to our plans and strive to control every detail of life. Yet, surrendering control and trusting God’s plan is one of the most freeing acts of worship. Lay your worries before Him, trusting that He is sovereign over every aspect of your life. - Busyness and Distractions:
During the holiday season, it’s easy to get caught up in the busyness—shopping, decorating, and endless to-do lists. Surrender your distractions and make room for Jesus. Let your focus be on Him rather than the hustle. - Brokenness and Burdens:
The wise men brought their best treasures, but Jesus also welcomes us to bring our brokenness. Whether you’re struggling with fear, pain, or uncertainty, lay it all before Him. Trust that He is the Redeemer who can turn ashes into beauty.
A Season of Worship
The wise men’s journey wasn’t easy, but they came prepared to honor Jesus with their very best. This Advent, let’s do the same. Worship doesn’t have to look perfect; it simply requires a heart fully surrendered to Him.
Take time to reflect on how you can worship Jesus in your daily life this season. Whether through prayer, generosity, or laying down your burdens, let your actions echo the adoration of the wise men.
This Christmas, may we be reminded that Jesus is worthy of our worship—not just during Advent but every day of our lives.
What will you surrender to Him today? How can you reflect His joy and peace to those around you this season?
Stay wildly faithful,
xoxox, Erin
