In a world filled with stress, worry, and constant busyness, finding peace often feels impossible. But as believers in Christ, we have access to a peace that surpasses all understanding. The Bible calls us to let God’s peace rule in your heart (Colossians 3:15). But what does it really mean to let this peace reign? And how can we experience true, lasting peace in the midst of life’s struggles?
In this post, we will dive into Colossians 3:15, connect it with the beautiful truth in Colossians 3:4—that Christ is our life—and anchor ourselves in the promise of Isaiah 9:6, where Jesus is called the Prince of Peace. Let’s explore how you can experience the deep, unshakable peace of God today.
Let the Peace of Christ Rule in Your Heart (Colossians 3:15)
The word “rule” in Colossians 3:15 comes from the Greek word brabeuo, which means to govern or to act as an umpire. It’s a picture of Christ’s peace calling the shots in our hearts—deciding what stays and what goes. When we allow God’s peace to rule, we are inviting Him to settle every inner conflict, every anxious thought, and every worry with His perfect wisdom.
But how do we do this? It begins with surrender. We must acknowledge that we cannot create peace on our own. It’s a gift that comes from the Holy Spirit, as we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.
Jesus, the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)
Isaiah 9:6 gives us one of the most beautiful titles for Jesus: Sar Shalom, meaning Prince of Peace. In Hebrew, the word Sar means “prince” or “ruler”—someone who holds authority, governs, and has dominion. This points to Jesus’ rightful authority over all things. He isn’t just a passive bringer of peace; He actively reigns and rules as the sovereign Lord over every aspect of our lives.
The word Shalom is much deeper than our common understanding of peace. In Hebrew, shalom means wholeness, completeness, soundness, and well-being. It signifies not just the absence of conflict, but the presence of something far greater—a sense of total harmony with God, others, and even within ourselves. So when Isaiah calls Jesus the Sar Shalom, he is declaring that Jesus is the One who has authority over perfect peace, bringing fullness and restoration to every part of our lives.
Jesus is our PeacE:
In Ephesians 2:14, Paul proclaims that Jesus “Himself is our peace.” This statement affirms that peace is not merely something Jesus gives, but that it is rooted in His very being. He broke down the dividing wall between us and God through His sacrifice on the cross, reconciling us to God and granting us peace with Him.
Further, in John 14:27, Jesus tells His disciples, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” The peace Jesus gives is not fleeting or circumstantial—it is His own divine peace, lasting and secure in all situations.
Philippians 4:7 reinforces this by promising that the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. This peace is not something we manufacture; it flows from the presence of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, reigning in our hearts.

How Sar Shalom Transforms Our Lives:
When you allow Jesus, the Sar Shalom, to reign in your heart, you aren’t just asking for temporary relief from stress—you are inviting Him to restore every broken area of your life. His peace brings healing, reconciliation, and a sense of completeness that only He can provide.
No matter what storms you face, Jesus, the Prince of Peace, offers a peace that is unshakable. As you let God’s peace rule in your heart, you can rest knowing that the One who holds all authority is working for your good, offering a peace that goes beyond human understanding and fills you with His presence.
How to Let Peace Rule in Your Heart Every Day
- Daily Surrender: Each day, make a conscious decision to surrender your worries, plans, and anxieties to God. Trust in His goodness and His perfect timing.
- Focus on Christ: Fix your eyes on Jesus by reading the Word, praying, and meditating on His promises. Remind yourself that Christ is your life and that He is faithful to fulfill every promise.
- Guard Your Heart: Be mindful of what you allow into your heart. Protect your peace by choosing gratitude, prayer, and praise over worry and fear.
- Lean on Community: God designed us to live in community with other believers. Surround yourself with people who point you back to Christ and encourage you to rest in His peace.
A Daily Invitation
Letting the peace of God rule in your heart isn’t just a one-time decision; it’s a daily invitation to allow Jesus, the Prince of Peace, to govern your thoughts, emotions, and decisions. As Colossians 3:15 reminds us, this peace is meant to rule, not take a backseat to fear or anxiety. By understanding that Christ is your life and resting in His promise as the Prince of Peace, you can walk confidently in the peace that only He provides.
Today, will you choose to let the peace of God reign in your heart? Trust in His sovereignty, surrender your worries, and experience the true peace that only comes from Jesus.
A Personal Note from Erin:
I have to be honest—this is something I’ve struggled with myself. Life gets so chaotic, and sometimes it feels like everything is spinning out of control. But each morning, as I spend quiet time with the Lord, I’m reminded of this truth: Jesus is my peace. When I surrender my heart to Him, even in the smallest moments, He fills me with a calm I can’t explain. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I encourage you to pause, breathe, and let God’s peace rule in your heart today. He’s got you, and you don’t have to carry it all on your own!
xoxo, Erin
