Thanksgiving is more than a holiday; it’s a way of life. Living in constant thanksgiving can truly transform our walk with God, turning our hearts into steady beacons of praise, much like the lamps burning in the tabernacle. This month, I’m diving into Psalm 34, taking time to study it during November, and I’ll be sharing blog posts related to this beautiful Psalm throughout the month. I’d love to invite you to join me in studying Psalm 34 over the next few weeks as we prepare our hearts for Advent. For those of you looking to start, check out my recent post on Preparing Our Hearts for Advent, where I talk about making room for God’s light to shine through this season.
A Life of Constant Thanksgiving
The lamps in the tabernacle were commanded by God to burn continuously, symbolizing His unbroken presence among the Israelites (Exodus 27:20-21). These lamps had to be tended to carefully, never left to burn out. This act of devotion reminds us that living in constant thanksgiving doesn’t just happen on its own. It’s a practice, a spiritual discipline, and a way of keeping our hearts connected to God through every season.
In the same way, choosing to live in constant thanksgiving means we must tend to our hearts daily. When we wake up and praise God first thing in the morning, when we pause midday to thank Him, and when we end our day in gratitude, we are refilling the oil in our lamps, keeping our hearts lit with His love and presence. This constant thanksgiving invites God into every moment, no matter what’s going on around us.
A Heart of Praise, Always Burning
Psalm 34:1 calls us to “extol the Lord at all times,” inviting us into a heart posture of praise, not just on Sundays or in moments of blessing, but in all times. The Hebrew word for “extol” (barak) conveys a deep sense of blessing or kneeling in reverence, showing us that thanksgiving is an act of humility. When we choose constant thanksgiving, we humble ourselves before God, acknowledging His faithfulness in all things.
Psalm 145:1-2 echoes this daily devotion to praise: “Every day I will bless You, and I will praise Your name forever and ever.” This isn’t just a once-in-a-while occurrence—it’s a lifestyle. By choosing to “praise Him at all times,” we allow gratitude to become like those lamps, an unending light that shines through every season of life.
Paul also speaks to this theme of unbroken thanksgiving in the New Testament, encouraging believers to let thanksgiving be the constant posture of our hearts:
- 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
- Ephesians 5:20 – “Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- Colossians 3:17 – “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
No matter the circumstances, these verses encourage us to remain in a state of gratitude, trusting that our praise and thanksgiving align us with God’s perfect will.
The Transformative Power of Daily Thanksgiving
Living in constant thanksgiving doesn’t only glorify God; it changes us. When we give thanks daily, we stop focusing on what we lack and start recognizing God’s blessings. It transforms our view of ourselves from being defined by struggles or inadequacies to being recipients of God’s mercy and love. Gratitude shifts our perspective to see that, regardless of our circumstances, His goodness and presence are always near.
The beauty of thanksgiving is that it renews our hearts each day. As 1 Thessalonians 5:18 reminds us, “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Living with this constant thanksgiving lets our praise flow out of hearts fully aware of His presence and love.
Reflection: Keeping Your Heart in Constant Thanksgiving
Keeping a heart of constant thanksgiving, like those burning lamps in the tabernacle, is more than a spiritual ideal. It’s a practice that draws us closer to God and aligns our hearts with His will. Today, try setting aside a few moments throughout your day to reflect on His goodness. Maybe start a gratitude journal or simply thank Him for something specific each morning.
When we live with thanksgiving always on our lips, our hearts become steady lights in a world that often feels dark. We mirror the constant flame of the tabernacle lamps, illuminating our lives and drawing others toward the warmth of His presence.
As you continue to live in constant thanksgiving, know that every praise and every moment of gratitude is like adding oil to your heart’s lamp, keeping it burning brightly for Him.
xoxo, Erin
