Psalm 34:15 (NIV) says:
“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their cry.”
This verse paints a comforting picture of a God who is deeply attentive to His people. It assures us that we are seen, heard, and cared for, even when the world around us feels dismissive or distant. Let’s explore this verse’s rich meaning, reflect on God’s character, and dive into how it applies to our lives today.
Hebrew Word Study
- Eyes (עֵינֵי, ‘enei’)
The Hebrew word for “eyes” conveys watchfulness and care. It’s not a passive glance but an active, loving gaze that reflects God’s constant attention. - Righteous (צַדִּיקִים, tzaddiqim’)
This term refers to those who live in faith and obedience to God. Righteousness isn’t earned but is a gift through faith in Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21). - Attentive (קָשַׁב, qashab’)
This word means to incline or to listen carefully. It shows God’s personal involvement, leaning in to hear His children’s cries.
God’s Character and Attributes
- Faithfulness: God never fails or forgets His promises to us.
- Compassion: His watchful care reveals His deep love for us, even in our hardest seasons.
- Omniscience: God sees the entirety of our lives—our struggles, joys, and everything in between.
Cross-References

- God’s Sovereignty: He is always in control, watching over us with love and care.
A Personal Story: Seen in the Chaos
When my youngest hit 4 months old, sleep became a distant memory. I felt like I was awake every hour of the night, rocking my baby and praying for rest. This postpartum season was harder than I expected—harder than I thought it “should” be as a mom of four. With older kids and years of parenting experience, I heard comments like, “How hard can it be? You’ve done this before!”
Those words stung. I felt dismissed and isolated, unable to express the deep exhaustion and overwhelm I was walking through.
One particularly difficult night, I was rocking my son in a dark room while playing Same God by Elevation Worship. As the lyrics poured over me, tears streamed down my face. I felt the Holy Spirit whisper, “I see you. I hear you.”
In that moment, I was reminded of Psalm 34:15—that even when I feel unheard or unseen by others, God’s eyes are on me, and His ears are always open to my cries. That song became my anthem, a reminder that I can always call out to God, and He hears every single cry.
Reflection Questions
- When have you felt unseen or unheard by others? How did God remind you of His presence during that time?
- Are you living with the confidence that God sees and hears you? If not, what’s holding you back?
- What steps can you take this week to intentionally bring your struggles and joys before God in prayer?
Points of Application
- Cry Out to Him: Remember, God’s ears are always attentive. Speak to Him openly about your feelings and needs.
- Rest in His Watchfulness: Trust that God sees every detail of your life. You are not alone.
- Anchor Yourself in His Word: Begin each day by meditating on scripture and aligning your heart with God’s truth.
A Personal Note from Erin
Dear friend,
If you’re feeling unseen or unheard today, take heart, and hold on to the promise of Psalm 34:15. God’s eyes are on you. His ears are always open to your cries, no matter how small or overwhelmed you may feel. I know what it’s like to feel dismissed or isolated, but I also know the profound peace that comes from resting in the truth that God never fails.
He is El Roi, the God who sees you. Lean into Him and let His presence fill the gaps that others can’t.
Stay wildly faithful.
