Post #12 Trusting God’s Sovereignty in the Unexpected
As we journey through Advent, reflecting on the birth of Christ and the unfolding of God’s redemptive plan, it’s incredible to see how He orchestrates the events of history. In today’s readings—Ruth 1–4, Micah 5:2, and Luke 2:1–20—we see God’s hand at work, weaving together stories, people, and even empires to bring about His purposes. These truths encourage us to consider how God’s sovereignty applies to our lives today, especially when we find ourselves in seasons of the unexpected.
God’s Sovereignty in History and Scripture
Galatians 4:4–5 says, “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”
The phrase “the fullness of time” reminds us that everything in history happened at just the right moment according to God’s perfect plan. From Caesar Augustus’ decree for a census to the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, every detail served God’s purposes.
Bethlehem itself, the “house of bread,” was the prophesied birthplace of the Messiah (Micah 5:2). It’s no coincidence that the Bread of Life, Jesus, was born there. This detail reflects how Scripture beautifully ties together God’s promises and their fulfillment, reminding us that no part of history is random or outside of His control.
Seeing God’s Hand in the Details
The story of Ruth and Boaz further illustrates this truth. What seemed like ordinary decisions—Ruth staying with Naomi, Boaz acting as a kinsman-redeemer—became pivotal in the lineage of Christ. These events led to Obed, the grandfather of King David, ultimately connecting to Jesus. God used the faithfulness of individuals and even the mundane details of life to bring about His eternal plan.
Similarly, He works in our lives today. While we may not see the bigger picture, we can trust that God is using both the faithful and the unfaithful to accomplish His purposes. As He did with Mary and Joseph, Ruth and Boaz, and even Caesar Augustus, God is orchestrating every detail for His glory.
Applying God’s Sovereignty to Our Current Moments
Reflecting on these truths challenges us to consider how God’s sovereignty applies to our present cultural moment and personal circumstances. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the noise of the world or discouraged by unexpected challenges in life. Yet, as we see in Scripture, God is always at work—often in ways we cannot yet see.
This has been especially true in my life over the last four years. Between the pandemic and an unexpected pregnancy, my entire life was turned upside down. I’ve found myself living in a long season of “the unexpected,” where my plans, dreams, and expectations were flipped. But just as God worked through the unexpected circumstances of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, I have seen His hand guiding me through a path I never imagined.
For example, I feel the Holy Spirit leading me to homeschool my three-year-old, even though it wasn’t part of my plan. It’s not something I feel prepared for or particularly excited about. But just as Mary, Joseph, and Ruth trusted God’s leading, I’m choosing to be obedient. Why? Because I know that every big and small thing I’m walking through is already surrounded by God’s presence.
I’m holding on to the promise that God has gone before me, stands behind me, and surrounds me completely. Even in hardship, what the enemy intends for harm, God will use for good (Genesis 50:20; Romans 8:28). It’s not always easy to surrender, but clinging to His promises—even when it feels like I’m white-knuckling the hem of His robe—is how I find peace and strength.
Encouragement for the Journey
- Trust God’s Timing: Just as He perfectly timed Christ’s birth, God’s timing in your life is perfect. Whether you’re facing uncertainty or unexpected changes, remember that His plans are for your ultimate good and His glory.
- Seek Daily Obedience: God’s call often requires us to take one step at a time. Trust that He will provide the grace and wisdom you need, just as He did for Mary, Joseph, and Ruth.
- Rest in His Promises: Surround yourself with Scripture that reminds you of God’s faithfulness. When life feels overwhelming, let His Word anchor you in truth.
- Look for His Hand in the Details: Even mundane or difficult circumstances can be part of a greater purpose. God is always working, even when we don’t fully understand His plan.
A Prayer for Surrender
Lord, thank You for Your sovereignty over all things. Help me to trust You in the big and small moments of my life. Give me the faith to follow where You lead, even when it’s hard or unexpected. Thank You for surrounding me with Your presence and for working all things together for Your glory. Help me to rest in Your promises and surrender my plans to Yours. Amen.
This Advent, let’s reflect on how God’s faithfulness in history encourages us to trust Him in our lives today. No matter where He’s leading or what challenges we face, we can rest in the truth that He is in control, weaving every detail into His perfect plan.
Stay wildly faithful.
xoxoxo, Erin
